Oliver Ellsworth (1745-1807) American lawyer and politician, a revolutionary against British rule, a drafter of the United States Constitution, United States Senator from Connecticut, and the third Chief Justice of the Supreme Court appointed by Washington. Took prominent part in Connecticut’s activities in Revolutionary War and one of the commissioners to France who negotiated an agreement with Napoleon.
