Autograph Document Signed, 7.75” x 3.75”, Feb 3rd 1853, “Executive Department,” authorizing payment. In part: “Will pay to the order of D.W.C. Duncan the sum of One Hundred & Sixty Six Dollars & sixty six cents out of the Public School fund for services as teacher… John Ross.” “D.W.C. Duncan” has signed the verso stating he received payment. Amazing part of American History!

John Ross (1790-1866), was the Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation from 1828-1866, serving longer in this position than any other person. Described as the Moses of his people, Ross influenced the former Indian nation through such tumultuous events as the relocation to Indian Territory and the American Civil War.
