English financier, public official, and philanthropist (1673-1744); made his fortunes as a paymaster-general of the forces during the War of Spanish Succession; a patron of Handel; established a medical chair at St. Andrews and helped found the London Foundlings Hospital.
Choice Manuscript Signed "Brydes" as paymaster-general. Brydges agrees to "hereby Assign and Transferr unto Harry Mordannt Esqr. and his Assigns all the Right, Title, and Interest to the Principal Sume mention'd in this Order and Tally thereunto belonging with all Interest due and to grow due thereupon from the date thereof." 1p, narrow oblong 8vo, Pay Office [London]. February 22, 1710/11. Written on verso of a printed order in virtue of an Act of Parliament of the same month introduced by Brydes "in Repayment of Loan on Malt, &c." Though it refers to that document , the present one is complete in itself. Age-toned, with light show-through, otherwise VG. At the time of this document Chandos's star was rising fast. He became incredibly wealthy but lost most of it when the South Sea bubble burst in 1720.
