Autograph Letter Signed “Thos. Sully,” 1 page, 12mo, Baltimore, May, [no day], 1853. To writer and historian Brantz Mayer, he pens, “I wish I knew how to express the grateful sense I have experienced from the kindness and hospitality of the Baltimoreans. One line from your pen published in the ‘American’ would answer the purpose, but perhaps this is asking too much…” Some light foxing, otherwise in very good condition. Matted between color prints of Sully’s portraits of Major John and Major Thomas Biddle and contained under glass in a wooden frame, overall size 11.6” x 16”.
English-born American painter (1783 – 1872); studied portraiture under Gilbert Stuart and Benjamin West, developing his own style in their tradition. Among other things, Mayer founded the Maryland Historical Society. Based in Philadelphia, Sully had worked in Baltimore before, and it was there that he taught Alfred Jacob Miller.
