Autograph Letter Signed, "W.B. Franklin," Exposition Universelle stationary 2p. "Paris; 1889 June 29. My dear Major, I have just received your dispatch stating "cheque for state aid for fifty thousand dollars required personal tax seven hundred eighty eight dollars received shall I pay it. {Berninghaur"]. I enclose check for the amount $50000 payable to E. M. [Buisces] order as cashier, with a letter to him informing his about the matter. Please pay my tax from funds in the Bank..." Some splitting on folds; however ink is dark. VG
William Buel Franklin (1823-1903) career United States Army officer and a Union Army general in the American Civil War. He rose to the rank of a Corps commander in the army of Potomac. Soon after the beginning of the Civil War, Franklin was anointed colonel of the 12th U.S. Infantry but three days later, on May 17, 1861 he was promoted to brigadier general of volunteers and led a brigade at First Bull Run. Following the Civil War he became the Vice-President of the Colt Firearms Manufacturing Company until 1888.
