Printed Card Signed, "Pat Gray". Printed caption: "Autograph L. Patrick Gray, III Acting Director Federal Bureau of Investigation". 5.5" x 2 .75" Fine.
Louis Patrick Gray III (1916 - 2005) was appointed by President Nixon to be Acting Director of the FBI upon J. Edgar Hoover's death. FBI Deputy Director W. Mark Felt had hoped he would have been appointed FBI Director. A disappointed Felt then became the "Deep Throat" source for reporters Woodward and Bernstein in the Watergate scandal. Learning of Felt's role less than two months before his death, Gray expressed shock and a sense of betrayal. Gray was also bitter that the Nixon administration withdrew support for him, leaving him in the words of Nixon aide, John Ehrlichman, "to twist slowly in the wind." Gray withdrew his name from Senate consideration as candidate for permanent Director and resigned from the FBI on April 27, 1973. In 1978, Gray was indicted for approving break-ins during the Nixon administration, but he was never prosecuted. Gray's Memoirs, "In Nixon' Web: A Year in the Cross-Hairs of Watergate", was completed by Gray's son and published posthumously.
