American patriot, merchant, jurist and public official (1760-1833); second US Secretary of the treasury; Governor of Connecticut; resigned as Secretary in 1800 when accused of corruption by the rising Jeffersonians; a subsequent investigation fully exonerated him.
Autograph Letter Signed, "Oliv: Wolcott" as Secretary of the Treasury, 4to, Trenton, [NJ], Aug. 28. 1798. He writes Nathaniel Ferry of Hartford, CT, acknowledging his letter and promising to "support the representation you have made in favour of Mr. Barret, to the Secy. of War - it is impossible for me however to impress an opinion as to the success of the application, the number of candidates being considerable..."
With Autograph Integral Leaf Franked "Free / Oliv:Wolcott" in left left corner. Seal hole in address leaf, some uneven toning of recto, otherwise VG. Wolcott is common in documents as a Revolutionary official and in letters from the early 19th century, but not often seen in his cabinet years.
