Prince of Wales, Eldest son of George II (1707-1751); father of George III; at odds with his father, he was effectively banished from court; a great patron of opera, art and cricket.
Rare Manuscript Letter Signed, "Frederick P." as Prince of Wales, in German, 3/4 p, legal folio, St. James's, 1/13 Jan: 1736. He writes to a German prince, thanking him for his New Year's wishes and reciprocating. With elaborate integral address panel. Seal cut out of integral page. Uneven toning, wear especially along right edge, with loss in blank margin repaired with matching paper. Minor edge tears effecting one word of text, and with a small hole near signature. Overall in Good condition, and fully legible. Like his father, Frederick was raised in Germany, but he sought to acclimate himself to his role as the heir to the English throne. His own son, born two years after this document was signed, would become England's first native-born monarch in nearly half a century.
