"Message from the President of the United States Transmitting Communications from the American Ministers at Ghent Shewing the Progress and State of the Negotiations for Peace with Great Britain." James Madison, John Quincy Adams, et al. Washington, A & G. Way, December 1, 1814. 8vo, later 1/4 calf with marbled boards. Calf off at spine, but binding intact and tight. Pages age-toned, lightly foxed, but clean, overall very good/fine.
This historic Presidential message relates the issued being negotiated with the British, notably the border with Canada and the disposition of England's Native American allies. It shows that both sides seek peace, which was achieved when the Treaty of Ghent was signed on December 24. Since news of the treaty took weeks to cross the Atlantic, fighting continued after the war was officially over, including the Battle of New Orleans, a stunning American victory, on January 8.
