Grandson of William B. Astor (1848-1919) and heir to the family fortune; after a family feud, moved to England, where he became a citizen; for his philanthropy, he was rewarded with a barony. Autograph Letter Signed, "WW Astor," 1 page, 8vo, on stationery embossed with his address, [NYC], August 7, 1882. To Thomas B. Acton, he writes, "The President [Chester A. Arthur] has honored me with a most gratifying distinction & one I feel proud of. It is a great pleasure at this time to receive the congratulations which many friends have addressed me, & I beg you to receive my cordial thanks..."
