Rosa Bonheur (1822 – 1899). Painter and Sculptor, noted for her great accuracy and detail of her images of animals. She was a Salon exhibitor from 1841 on. One of her paintings, “The Horse Fair” was bought by Cornelius Vanderbilt in 1887 for a record price, and was later widely reproduced becoming her most famous work. She was the first woman to be awarded the Grand Cross of the Legion d’Honneur in 1865.
