[CIVIL WAR] Major General Franz Sigel – Autograph Letter Signed 1879
Autograph Letter Signed: "F. Sigel", 1p, 5”x8”. New Yok City, 1879 December 24. In part: ”Dear General / I thank you for the two copies of the Pha Inquirer and would have called at your office but did not come down town yesterday and day before. I also read this morning the telegraphic dispatched from Utica and hope it is true!"
Union General Franz Sigel's German troops were proud of serving under one of their own, and their rallying cry, "I fights mit Sigel", became well known in the Army of the Potomac. After suffering defeat at the hands of Confederate General John C. Breckenridge at the Battle of New Market in 1864 and only delaying General Jubal Early at Harpers Ferry, Sigel was relieved of command for "lack of aggression".
Lightly creased. Overall, in fine condition.
