William Farquhar Barry (1818-79) Graduated in the West Point class of 1838. He served during the Mexican War as aide-de-camp to General William J. Worth. Appointed brigadier general on August 20, 1861, he took an active part in the peninsular campaign and was later chief of artillery of the huge defense system which encircled Washington, D.C. In 1864, he was assigned as chief of artillery on the staff of General William T. Sherman participating in all the actions of the Atlanta campaign, and the 1865 Carolina's campaign which terminated in the surrender of General Joseph E. Johnston.
