THOMAS WHITE FERRY (1827 –1896), July 28 (1876), Card Signed, “T. W. Ferry – Pres of Senate,” 2.75” x 4.25, Choice Mint.
This signature card of Thomas W. Ferry, protected for over a century inside its original envelope (included), recalls an unusual event in American History. As President Pro Tempore of the Senate, he became Acting Vice-President during 1875- 1877, following the death of Vice-President Henry Wilson. Ferry signed this card as President of the Senate, but if it was signed during 1876 as we believe, he was also Acting Vive-President. During this time, he presided over the impeachment trial of Secretary of War William W. Belknap. The original envelope is postmarked “Wash’n D.C. – Congress,” indicating it was mailed from the Capitol Building. There is no year date, but from other autograph in the Lord Collection, we know that they began collecting signatures in 1876 and most in the collection are from 1876-1877.
In addition, the stamped envelope used is from the 1870’s. The envelope is in nice condition with the usual postal smudging and soiling.
A wonderful piece of American History.
