Confederate general known as "Little Bill" (1826 -1895); became perhaps the South's top divisional commander fighting in the Peninsular Campaign and in the battles of Second Bull Run (where he was wounded), Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, and Spotsylvania; after the the war, as railroad builder and US Senator from VA.
Choice partly-engraved Document Signed "William Mahone" as president of the Atlantic, Mississippi & Ohio Railroad Company; dated November 15, 1873. Certificate issues seven shares to James C. Taylor. With beautiful vignettes of a train passing a mountain at top, and, at bottom, an interpretation of the Virginia State Seal. Also signed by company treasurer "James E. Cuthbert". Lightly age-toned, two folds & left edge rough. otherwise in very good condition.
The A, M & O would be hit hard by the Panic of 1873, and in 1881 it was bought out by a northern company and renamed the Norfolk & Western.
