This is a beautifully engraved un-issued stock certificate from the inception of the New York Yankees from the very start of their American League franchise in New York City in 1903 when they were originally named the “Highlanders.”
The 11 X 8.5 certificate from the Greater New York Baseball Association dated “190X” was prepared for the issuance of an unspecified number of $100 shares for the raising of $100,000 of capital stock for the establishment of the Highlanders originally named in recognition of their ballpark called “Hilltop Park,” that was hastily built on a site that was one of the highest points in Manhattan. Ten years later when the team moved to share the Polo Grounds with the New York Giants they were officially renamed the “Yankees” and began their ascent towards becoming the greatest dynasty in sports history.
The certificate displays beautiful ornate borders and vignette of allegorical women leaning on a shield featuring an American eagle upon its crest. It is framed with two-sided glass to show the fancy verso as well. This is an incredible relic from the birth of baseball’s most fabled franchise.
