The New York and Brooklyn Union Ferry Co. was formed in 1839 and acquired a number of small ferry services on the east River. By 1857 it had become the Brooklyn Ferry Company of New York, with a number of regular services between Manhattan and and Long Island. The company survived the opening of the Brooklyn bridge in 1883, but the opening of the Williamsburg Bridge (further north in 1896 brought a major decline in ferry traffic, and the company sold all its assets to the New York Terminal Company, perhaps in 1906 when this Trust Certificate was issued. In 1908, the Brooklyn Co. was defunct; in that year the 5 East River ferry services were abruptly closed.
